Book Club!!

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

So Matt and I decided to start a book club, members so far are... Matt, and I. If y'all are interested you are more than welcome to join!!! He is really into government, policies, and theories on how to make the world better. I am into stories that invite you into another culture or way of living. Both our tastes in literature help broaden our views of life and force us to step out of our comfort zone. The point is not to read what we like but to learn from what we read. Here are the first books on the list. I'm sure you can tell who picked which book.

The Road To Serfdom by F.A. Hayek

Black Boy by Richard Wright

Healing Our World by Dr. Mary Ruwart

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

Make Austin a No Kill City

Saturday, March 6, 2010

I'm talking about animals of course. Austin Pets Alive is a non profit foundation dedicated to rescue and adopt out as many animals as it can. Now this awesome organization has sent a proposal to the Austin City Council suggesting they take over the job managing the city's adoption program. They claim that they can make Austin a no kill city for less money than the city government uses now. I personally agree. They adopt out more animals than the Townlake Animal Shelter does. Also they work off of volunteers. The city pays the workers at the shelters, which is not a bad thing, but if you merge both ideas and make good the use of volunteers, more will get done. Townlake Animal Shelter is where Matt and I got Lilly. I love the place, and right now they are only putting down about 30% of animals. With a little push and help I'm positive it can become a No Kill site. On the first of March the Health and Human Services subcommittee voted unanimously to move forward with the Animal Advisory Commission’s (AAC) recommendations. Great day for animal lovers everywhere! It still isn’t finalized yet though. I like dropping by to some of the Austin Pets Alive event in SoCo, and I plan on attending Yuppy Hour (happy hour for us humans) next month, Ill make sure to blog about that! Here are some links if you are interested in reading up on this city proposal.

Some of my Cakes.

Monday, March 1, 2010

So recently I started dabbling in the world of cake decorating. I'm not great by any means, but my cakes aren't ugly either. I decided to post a few just so I have them all in on spot. Enjoy.

Kayal and Usha's Birthday

For Matt's Birthday I made a heavy metal cake with the South Park version of himself on top.

This cake was for a co-worker. She wanted this cake for her sister's baby shower. Sofia helped a lot with this cake. The baby's name was ARAH. The theme for the cake was pink Dallas Cowboys. Thats why the baby is wearing a helmet.

This last cake was for a new co-worker's daughter. She was turning ten and wanted to design and draw out her own cake. Hot pink and peace signs were the theme. Creative I know. Also instead of fondant I used frosting.. last time I do that... the frosting drove me crazy! Just ask Matt. But the cake came out how the little girl wanted it, and she was so excited that the frosting drama was all worth it.

Dog Park on Riverside

Sunday, February 21, 2010

The best damn dog park in Austin is located on I35 and Riverside. Walkable from where I live. The group of people who bring their dogs here range from hippies to downtown-ites. Our love of dogs brings us together to this fun and energetic park. There is a small dog side, but most dogs play in the open area. Lilly LOVES this place. We try to bring her here 3 to 4 times a week... click on the pics to make them bigger...

happy Lilly!!

Valentine's Day

Monday, February 15, 2010

Happy Valentine's Day to all my friends out there. I had a great weekend. I watched the movie "Valentine's Day" and it was super cute, especially the part when they played Indian music! On Friday my class had their V-day party after lunch. I wanted to do something special for my kids and some teachers I work with. So whats more special than homemade cupcakes right?! I used plain strawberry cake mix and vanilla icing. I did however use my frosting bag and 22M frosting tip to ice my cupcakes. I bought a bunch of cupcake boxes from walmart....yes walmart. They were super cute and came 12 in a pack! Add some sprinkles and a heart on top! It was easy and fun to do. The best part is that everyone appreciated and loved them. Its a good idea if you are on a budget as well. Enjoy!

it was hell carrying the whole big box

Alamo Bowl- San Antonio

Sunday, January 10, 2010

So on January 2nd Matt and I went to the Alamo Bowl. It was dirty Texas Tech vs. Michigan State, Matt's Alum. Also playing for MSU wide receiver is Matt's cousin Keith last name Nichol. he was pretty good. Made a touch down! There is another cousin on the team Kyle... or as I dubbed him "Baby Bear". He loves the name, just puts up a front that he hates it. Our seats were great! first row on the field next to the band, thank you family seats! The band was good too, even though the color guard did not have matching flags (i hate that). The drum line does a cool thing at the end of the 3rd quarter. They come to the front of the stands and play some beats for the fans, while Sparty conducts. We were sitting in the front so it felt like they were playing for me :)

It was no TX/ou.. but I had a great time. I got a half yard (alcoholic drink) and drank a lot of beer! Sparty is a nicely made mascot. But Bevo can horn him any day. I wore green and white to support my BF, but the Spartans came up short. Impressive game though. Matt's cousin is turning out to be a good player, some experience and maybe MSU can compete with the big dogs :) As for now on to Basketball!!!! HOOK'EM HORNS!

MY CHOOOZ

My gorgeous talented super awesome best friend made these for me. Needless to say I was speechless and in awe of such a wonderful gift. Not only did I win but I also got to donate a pair to a child in need. TOMS shoes are awesome, if you can you should go buy some. Not to mention the owner is HOT. My boyfriend now hates Sofia, because this gift will be hard to top. And it will be hard for me to get her something just as cool. THANKS Sofia our lives are harder now..lol..
